While not officially substantiated, we felt it was worth noting since apparently the dangers are not over for our beloved pets. The poisonous substance referred to is acetaminophen (Tylenol) which is fatal in cats. The FDA link in the article is quite eye opening. Over 100 varieties of Nutro Products pet food subject to a Refusal Action by the FDA. ) According to information on the FDA site, the reason is the food was either adulterated with unapproved substances, contained known poisons, or both. There appears to be at least two substances involved. It is unclear if Nutro was trying to import their toxic waste, or to export it. According to Nutro, none of their products have ever tested positive for melamine. The obvious question is, what substances are involved? The FDA continues to keep a tight lid on anything that doesn't support the melamine from China theory. Any bets that contrary to the lies the FDA feeds to the media, the FDA has in fact duplicated the ExperTox results as shown in the lab section of the site?
One unsafe ingredient, one poisonous ingredient, and no melamine. http://www.petfoodrecallfacts.com/ Consumers with questions can call FDA at 1-888-SAFEFOOD.
| July 18, 2007 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expanding its warning to consumers. This expansion is for consumers and pet owners regarding canned food products and dog food produced by Castleberry's Food Company of Augusta, Ga., due to the risk of botulism toxin. Castleberry's is expanding the recall to include all of the following canned products with all "best by" and code dates, and FDA is warning consumers not to purchase or eat any of the canned products listed in the table below. | Natural Balance Eatables dog food varieties: | | Irish Stew with Beef Dog Food | 15 OZ | 23633-59860 | | Chinese Take Out with Sauce with Vegetables and Chicken Dog Food | 15 OZ | 23633-59861 | Southern Style Dumplings with Gravy with Chicken and Vegetables Dog Food | 15 OZ | 23633-59862 | | Hobo Chili with Chicken Pasta Dog Food | 15 OZ | 23633-59863 |
The disease has only been seen occasionally in dogs. Ferrets are highly susceptible to botulism toxin. The incubation period can be 2 hours to 2 weeks; in most cases, the symptoms appear after 12 to 24 hours. Botulism is characterized by progressive motor paralysis. Typical clinical signs may include muscle paralysis, difficulty breathing, chewing and swallowing, visual disturbances and generalized weakness may also occur. Death usually results from paralysis of the respiratory or cardiac muscles. Pet owners who have used these products and whose pets have these symptoms should contact their veterinarian immediately. At this time we are not aware of pet illnesses associated with these products although we recommend that all these products should be discarded. Castleberry's recommends consumers with any questions or concerns about this recall should go to Castleberry’s website (www.castleberrys.com) or call Castleberry’s consumer hotline at 1-800-203-4412 or 1-888-203-8446. have learned that byproducts from pet food manufactured with contaminated wheat gluten imported from China have been used in chicken feed on 30 broiler poultry farms and eight breeder poultry farms in the state of Indiana. FDA and USDA believe the likelihood of illness after eating chicken fed the contaminated product is very low. Because there is no evidence of harm to humans associated with consumption of chicken fed the contaminated product, no recall of poultry products processed from these animals is being issued. FDA and USDA have also traced contaminated feed to swine farms in several states, including California and Ohio. The FDA and USDA anticipate that as the investigation continues additional farms will likely be identified that received contaminated feed. |
In a related development, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) issued a press release on April 19, 2007, stating that CDFA laboratory testing had detected melamine in urine from hogs at the American Hog Farm in Ceres, CA. For further information, see: http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/exec/pa/pressreleases/PressRelease.asp?PRnum=07-038. Due to the involvement of animal feed, the FDA is working with CDFA on this development. FDA continues to work comprehensively to protect the nation’s pet food as well as to conduct a full investigation to determine any impact on the human food supply." | April 20, 2007 Certain varieties of Royal Canin dry cat and dog pet food and Blue Buffalo Spa Select dry kitten food are being recalled after more melamine (plastic) is found in rice protein. Natural Balance has recalled Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry dog food and treats. They have also pulled Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. The FDA continues to investigate how the melamine found it's way into these food sources. Since South Africa reported finding tainted corn gluten, the FDA is speculating whether the contamination was deliberate. Please continue to check back for more information or go to FDA to look for your brand. | March 16, 2007 There has been a massive Pet Food Recall. Please check with Menu Foods, a Canadian manufacturer, or the FDA, to see if your brand of pet food was tainted. Nearly 100 brands are listed. Initially limited to "wet gravy style" pouch and canned foods, the recall has now spread to dry kibble (Hills Prescription Diet feline m/d), treats and biscuits. It is now confirmed that melamine (plastic) has somehow contaminated the wheat gluten used as a protein filler that was imported from a Chinese supplier. Rat poison was also confirmed. Unfortunately, neither Menu Foods or the FDA can confirm 100% what is causing the pets' illness and deaths. "The FDA was working to rule out the possibility that the contaminated wheat gluten could have made it into any human food." (posted by CNN.com 3/31/07 1:44pm) This recall is not linked to the lawsuit regarding Royal Canin/Waltham veterinary food and its claims of renal failure. Pets from the Menu Foods recall are initially showing signs of loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, excessive urination and water consumption. If YOUR pet is exhibiting any of these signs - PLEASE SEE YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY. To date there are 16 confirmed deaths due to kidney failure. If you need assistance, call us. The FDA has received more than 8,000 complaints; Menu Foods, more than 300,000. | This is Pebbles, a 7 yr old Yorkshire Terrier from Southern California, who tragically died of sudden kidney failure after eating tainted Nutro brand dog food. Sadly, she has become a symbol of the national pet food recall. | |
