Catnip and Carrots Animal Bunch, Inc is a 501c3 nonprofit, all-volunteer, animal welfare organization dedicated to cats, rabbits and the occasional canine or critter! We operate solely on donations and 100% of our proceeds help animals in need.

We are not a shelter and cannot accept animals but we occasionally have pets for adoption through our limited foster network. What we do instead:

Our Mission is simple:

“We are a voice for those who can not speak.”

Catnip & Carrots Animal Bunch (C&C) has a unique idea about animal rescue:
“think outside the crate.”

Like all organizations, we have important guidelines but we don’t hold to hard and fast rules and we believe every animal has a distinct purrsonality and situation. What might be good for one animal, may not be in the best interest of another. Like people, they are individuals and deserve to be respected for their uniqueness.

For instance, we prefer all our cats to be indoors-only and we make every effort to make that happen. But sometimes we take in a stray who has never been confined and they simply do not adjust well and begin exhibiting severe behavioral problems, i.e. scratching, biting, urinating in inappropriate places, etc. Next thing you know, the animal is relinquished to a shelter and labled feral and subsequently euthanized. We believe there are alternatives to being caged or an untimely death.

We don’t have all the answers but we’ll certainly try to find one.

Susan Wise, President
Susan is the founder of Catnip and Carrots. Originally from southern Ohio, she is a former restaurant manager and bookkeeper turned writer (she has many stories published online) and is currently working on two children’s books: one about shelter adoptions and the other on the life of a stray cat. She has a degree in Business Accounting and is the former Treasurer for the Golden West Neighborhood Association in Huntington Beach and former CFO for the Palms-Tilden Manor Homeowners Association in Los Angeles. She is the former Secretary and Publicity Director for the Monroe Ohio Historical Society and past Board member of the Monroe Lending Library. She serves the City of Monroe as a member of the Parks & Recreation Board and Personnel Board. She is an active member of the Monroe Area Community Foundation and also works with the Monroe Civil War Days and Light Up the Sky committee’s. She made a short run for Monroe City Council before withdrawing but still received a rather large number of votes & is considering a bid in 2015. Susan is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Seven Hills Chapter. She began her work with animal welfare as a volunteer with Save Our Strays of Huntington Beach. Once C&C was formed, she ran our highly praised and very successful adoption center at the HB PetSmart. She also publishes our quarterly newsletter, FurrY TaleS, and designs our website. She has a 16 year old rescue cat, Lilijean (from a cardboard box in front of the West LA Petco). After spending most of her life surrounded by Yorkshire Terriers, she finally added a tiny boy named Stitch to her pet family - much to her mother's delight. The cat would prefer he live at Grandma's house!

Charlean (Charlie) Allen, Vice-President
Charlie is a lifelong animal rights proponent and rescuer.  Originally from the Bronx, NY, she is a retired LA County Deputy Sheriff who has been working as a substitute teacher for the OCDE Access Program (at-risk students) for the past 20+years. She has a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology and a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice Administration. Semi-retired, she is a world traveler and gives generously of her time and money to the animals. Charlie is very outgoing and is always "educating" others on the importance of Spay/Neuter and the need to help the stray pets in our community. Always smiling and full of life, she keeps very busy with her four cats, two Chihuahuas rescues and her pride & joy - her great-granddaughter Harper. She is fairly confident that someday one of them will push her down the stairs in their haste to beat her to wherever she is going!

Chie Yoshimura, Treasurer
Chie is co-founder of Catnip and Carrots. She was born in Japan and raised in Los Angeles and became a US citizen at age 9. She is a former Financial Analyst for the University of California, Irvine and University of California, Los Angeles. In her 20 year career with the University, she has worked with the prestigious National Fuel Cell Research Center and the Center for Health Policy Research. An Economics graduate from UCLA, she is a former Sunday school teacher for the Los Angeles Hongwanji Buddhist church, is a Certified Master koto player and was a torch runner for the 1988 Summer Olympics. She is former Treasurer & Membership Chair for the Monroe Historical Society, serves on the city of Monroe Ohio Finance Committee and is a member of the Monroe Area Community Foundation Development team. She spends her days as Staff Accountant for U.S. Foods in Cincinnati, Ohio. She enjoys the outdoors - hiking, rock climbing, spelunking and camping but spends most of her spare time devoted to animal welfare. Along with her Treasurer duties, she is also our Volunteer and Intake Coordinator. Never one to pass by an animal without stopping, she shares her home with a busy dog and a lazy (but very demanding) cat.

Cathy (Caite) Shinkle, Secretary
Cathy is originally from Cincinnati Ohio and attended Xavier University. A 20 year resident of Huntington Beach, she spends her days as a home health aide to the elderly. She is an avid animal lover, especially where cats are involved. She started out as a volunteer with Save Our Strays of Huntington Beach and was instrumental in the formation of Catnip and Carrots.  She is heavily involved in various activities of C&C and also volunteers with the Orange County Women's Focus Group. Cathy is the proud mom of ‘Dexter Shinkle’. After reluctantly fostering a young OC shelter rescue rabbit named Smokey, she couldn't resist falling in love with his outgoing personality. Eventually she decided to adopt him and renamed the lucky little guy "Bun-Bun". After his sudden passing, she ended up adopting yet another rabbit - a little lop eared they call Ms. Bun. Her house is truly filled with "Catnip and Carrots"!

Cathy Livings, Director
Cathy is originally from Anaheim California and is a Paralegal for a law firm in Fullerton, California. She received her degree from Coastline Community College in Costa Mesa, CA. She is an accomplished artist and has won several ribbons at the Orange County Fair, including 2006 Best in Show. Juggling a demanding job, she always finds time to attend each event and fundraiser and does a wonderful job of spreading the word about C&C. She also volunteers with the Orange County Women's Focus Group and shares her home with Sassy - a small tuxedo cat she recently took in after an elderly fellow painter took ill and went to a nursing facility, (then sadly passed away). A lover of all animals, life is perfect with a paint brush in one hand and petting a cat with the other. Problem is, that causes colorful, wet paw prints all around the her house!

As you can see, we are a very diverse group of individuals & we feel those differences will help us see “outside the crate” to create innovative changes for the animals in our community. Each one of us is a volunteer who gives generously of our time & believes very strongly in our calling to help those less fortunate pets who do not yet have a "family" of their own.

We are an IRS 501c3 public charity and rely solely on private donations and fundraiser's. Our Federal Tax ID is #20-3198293.

We are registered with the California Attorney Generals Office of Public Charities, Registry #CT127204. Our State of California business license is #C2768260 and our State of Ohio license is #1661965. Our Huntington Beach City license is #A269580.
We are also registered with the City of Monroe, Ohio. We think dog licenses are a good thing, too.
